Denouement
1987
life-sized

"My idea was to create a grand and powerful piece that would radiate the joy, release and contentment of being in love."

Lovers Jumping
In Progress

This is a pencil study for an epic, life-sized work, still in progress. The theme is quintessentially Newberry.

Icarus Landing
2001

Perhaps Newberry's most important symbolic work, this piece has been praised by the philosopher Stephen Hicks for its simultaneous reference to the Greek Icarus and the Christian crucifixion.

Pastels 1991
"The uncanny depth and form of the boxes and of each pastel creates a tactile realism. I have had whimsical pleasure seeing friends, having mistakenly thought that the pastels were real, touch the painting."

Pursuit
1984
life-sized

This work, finished when Newberry was 27 years old, is the first of his masterpieces. It debuts the color quality and attention to humanistic themes that characterize all of his subsequent major figurative works.

Blithe
1990, life-sized

Blithe is among the best examples of Newberry's powerful outward expressions of the inner being of a lone figure in a major work.
